    Description

This beautiful and rare, Thai Sukothai period box is a wonderful example of the prized wares created by amazing Thai craftsmen of the 14-16 century.
This lidded box was acquired in Japan, where such items were held in high regard by Japanese connoisseurs to be used in the Japanese Tea ceremony.
The beautiful well-potted box is made of white-buff porcelaneous material [probably stoneware].
It is adorned with brown-black iron oxide
    underglaze and light celadon overglaze.
The foliage and fishes are done in a sure expert hand. At the center of the lid, there is a dark brown handle, shaped like a mythical bird, around delicate flower scrolls arranged in a star shape.
The lid itself is double footed creating, a well-proportioned design from the top view.
The inside of the vessel is glazed with the same crackled light celadon overglaze.
The bottom is unglazed with a slight brown wash.
The box is in perfect condition with minor losses at the bottom.
