Late Summer 1864 • Petersburg
General Robert E. Lee
& his Horse Traveller
"FATE DENIED THEM VICTORY BUT GAVE THEM A GLORIOUS IMMORTALITY"
This immortality has been captured in these
CSA
Signature Series of restored images.
This print has General Lee's signature applied to it
This is an amazing image of General Lee and
T
raveller. Every so often I strike gold finding images. This is gold. It is almost as if Robert Capa (
arguably the greatest combat and adventure photographer in history and cofounder of Magnum Photos).
went back in time and snapped it. General Lee has his arm resting on some sort of contraption the photographer supplied which the General is using, holding what appears to be a handkerchief or one of his gauntlets to keep his head still which was necessary for the long exposure.  Apparently there is a neck brace also, notice how the General is leaning back on it. These
contraption were used by all photographers of that period do to the long exposures that were necessary. The most famous was the Brady Stand.
Meanwhile
T
raveller is cooperating by watching the photographer and wondering what is going on.  Again standing still. It is amazing how much luck comes into play when taking a great photograph.
Judging by the General’s uniform I would date the image around end of summer in 1864 during the Petersburg siege. Note he is wearing his dress sword, his Three Star Buckle, more than likely it was a Sunday and he has just returned from an inspection. Contemplating the condition of his Army and his next move.
The image is signed RE Lee Genl. This is his
actual signature.
The signature has been artistically applied; General RE Lee did not sign this image.
Particular note, as to General Robert E. Lee's uniform. General Lee
never
wore the traditional Confederate Generals or Officers Uniform with the gold ribbons on the sleeves and the gold stars enclosed by a wreath on his collar. He always wore the rank of three stars, the rank of US Army Colonel. The rank he held when he resigned from the US Army after being
offered the
command
of the Federal Army. Please see other items
in my store that historically described what General Lee wore (including an illustration) at the McLean House at Appomattox Court House.
In the late 1890's The new Museum of The Confederacy started hounding his oldest son Custis Lee  for some artifact of General Lee's like the uniform he
surrendered
in. Custis Lee being a Lee sent the them the uniform General Lee surrendered in. The uniform General George Washington Custis Lee Surrendered in. Not his fathers.
Guess
Custis figured they would never put it together. Till this day the Museum still displays it as the uniform General Robert E. Lee
wore
at Appomattox. Sad, but it sells tickets.

“There is an old saying…"you get what you pay for". Well I shopped around and found
.99, .99, prints,  fine arts prints for 5.88 up to 0.00.  They are what they are, un-restored prints made from badly deteriorated negatives. In some cases just badly copied from other photographs.  The archival fine art museum print I purchased from the Signature Series, CSA 04 with RE Lee signature is truly outstanding and worth every dollar. I feel like Robert E. Lee is sitting on my porch. Thank you".

ERRATA:
SOME people
seem a little confused as to my descriptions: (I want nobody to be disappointed in there purchase, I take great pride in what I do).
Let me make myself perfectly clear. What you see, is what you get, the image on eBay is the PRODUCT you will receive, and in all cases better. I have described in great detail each item and exactly what it is. If you have any requests or questions please do not hesitate to ask before you order, I will be happy to answer them.
Know what you are buying.
It is what it is, a
Museum Quality print
made and restored from a digital file using the original old glass negative and in rare instances a print, it is
NOT
an original print made in the 1860's and restored, (seems I had one buyer expecting an original restored print circa 1870's with actual signatures made by the General's on the print for .95) it is a
restored
archival digital reproduction, with the General's signature carefully applied, not some cheap print.
The Confederate Flag no
