Many soldiers formed a lifelong bond with their dogs.  Veterans of the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry ensured that their canine mascot, Sallie Ann Jarrett, would be remembered for generations as a symbol of loyalty.  A life-size, bronze statue of Sallie was included in a place of honor on the regiment’s monument at the Gettysburg Battlefield, where she faithfully remained guarding her injured and dead companions.
