    Built by the step-grandson and adopted son of George Washington and only grandson of Martha, Arlington House was once home to Robert E. Lee. It overlooks the Potomac River and the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
    Photograph shows a group of men, some Union soldiers, including African Americans, in front of Arlington House, Robert E. Lee's former home. The home was taken over by Union forces. June 28, 1864
    The grounds of the mansion were selected as the site of Arlington National Cemetery.
