French Havresac OrdinaireRecreated from the original specifications our Havresac Ordinaire is the perfect accessory for early French military impressions. Unlike the small square haversacks of English style, the French preferred a large combination haversac/knapsack. This quarter-fold bag contained all of the soldier's necessary camp provisions, rations, and extra clothing. Inside was often stored a smaller hair-on-hide bag for the soldier's small personal items. Wearing the bag is straight forward. One inserts all of his necessary items into one half of the bag, then folds over the extra material which acts a protective layer. When picked up by its strap for wearing, the bag folds in half again (over the strap). Rope, twine, or leather straps can be added to the outside of the havresac to help maintain its shape on the march if desired. Period descriptions even mention that the bag may be weatherproofed and used as a ground cloth or extra blanket while on campaign. Our reproduction is made from durable natural colored canvas. The genuine leather strap is adjustable and has an iron buckle. Shipping for this item is .00 to all locations in the continental US.
