Cricket Cage, Java

Description

Cricket Cages are very poplar throughout Asia as these tiny creatures, along with Beetles and Mantids, are very popular as pets, not only kept by children but adults as well. Crickets are valued for their singing as well as their physical movement.  This was purchased from an American art dealer based in the island of Bali, Indonesia in the early 1990s. He indicated to me it originated in the main island of Java. It's hard to say if this was an original antique, although it's likely it was a reproduction of an older object, however this remains the only one of a kind I have seen. The cage measures 14" L x 7 1/21" W x 6" H.
