    Union Army officers suffered through a living hell at the Confederate
    Libby Prison
    in Richmond, Virginia.
    Prisoners suffered from disease, malnutrition and a high mortality rate. By 1863, one thousand prisoners were crowded into large open rooms on two floors, with open, barred windows leaving them exposed to weather and temperature extremes.
    In this photo, captured on August 23, 1863, a group of people including Maj. Thomas P. Turner, Commandant of "The Libby," soldiers, and a young child, standing in front of tents on the prison grounds. The prison building, with its southern flag, is in the background.
