Antique Catholic Carved Wood Christ Bust from North Sumatra, Indonesia

Description

This is a wonderful example of an Antique Wood Christ Bust from Sumatra in the Indonesian archipelago.  I estimate the piece dates from the mid 1850's - a documented period when the Toba population (collectively called Batak people) on the northern end of the island of Sumatra came under the sway of the Catholic Church.  The figure is clearly an original and is made of a heavy hard wood giving it substantial weight for a figure of this size.
My father purchased this particular bust in Penang, Malaysia during the period he owned an antique shop on the island.
He had an affinity for Carved Wood Santos / Christ Figures and many times had difficulty locating nice examples to purchase  - otherwise he would have purchased many more.
