Antique 19th Century Indonesian Fan-Shaped Comb Dewi Sri Shape on Museum Stand
Balinese comb made of two separate types of wood, with the teeth being a lighter wood (perhaps bamboo?) and the comb holder made of a darker wood with floral relief imagery on both sides. Comb is held together with thin bronze wire with an intricate woven pattern and swirls at both sides. The comb is supported on a wood and metal museum quality base that is painted black.
If the comb is held with the teeth going downwards, the shape is representative of Dewi Sri, the Goddess of rice. Dewi Sri symbolism, recognizable by the flared skirt, is prevalent in Bali.  Dewi Sri has dominion over rice and fertility - life, birth and prosperity. Rice is the staple food in Indonesia; hence life and wealth or prosperity. The mythology of Dewi Sri is native to Java and Sunda and Hinduism in the archipelago since early as the first century. She was equated with the Hindu goddess Shri Lakshmi, and often regarded as an incarnation or one of her manifestations. Today, Dewi Sri is extensively worshipped on the islands of Java and Bali.
