Description
Tukatha (doll),Figure of a mother breastfeeding/nursing her baby. From about 14-15th Century,because by the 16th C. some basically monotone coloration was added. So, This one is about 100 years Older. It is made of a Celadon-glazed pottery from an Area & City named, Sawankhalok, in the province of Sukhothai, Thailand (a Buddhist country, once known as Siam). Notice the seated position, often seen in a Buddha., and thetopknot-style hairdo seen in a Thai Buddha.
These were Fertility figures, related to Humans and rain, etc. It was the Custom to break off the head and then reattach it; this can be seen here and is Not a defect!

Provenance: purchased in 1978 from Simon Kriger, prominent citizen of D.C., with renowned Collection.
